Attack on Mr. Trajkovic, Kosovo Serb Political Leader

Yesterday, on October 31, around 23.00 CET two unknown armed attackers wounded the President of the Executive Board of the Serb National Council of Kosovo and Metohija, Mr. Momcilo Trajkovic at the door of his flat in Pristina quarter of Dardania. In the last several years Mr. Trajkovic was the most prominent political opponent of Mr. Milosevic and the ethnic Albanian terrorism.
Just before the attack Mr. Trajkovic was alone in his flat when he heard the door bell. Since a KFOR patrol often used to visit Mr. Trajkovic to check his security he thought that it was a regular patrol check. Through the hole in the door Mr. Trajkovic could see two men who talked in Albanian with his Albanian neighbor in the corridor in front of his flat. Mr. Trajkovic opened the door and in this moment one of the Albanians took out his pistol and began swearing. He immediately shot a bullet which wounded Trajkovic in his right leg. When Trajkovic fell on the ground the attackers ran away probably thinking that they killed him. No one from the neighbors dared to help wounded Trajkovic and he finally managed to crawl to the telephone and call the KFOR patrol. Five minutes later a KFOR patrol arrived and took Trajkovic to the Russian millitary hospital in Kosovo Polje. The attackers also broke the glass on Mr. Trajkovic's car which was parked in front of his block of appartments. At the moment Mr. Trajkovic is recovering well and might be operated in a few days.
A few days ago Albanians broke into Trajkovic appartment and his cellar and stole some of his things. PTK (Kosovo Telecom) which is run by ethnic Albanians switched off both telephone lines in Mr. Trajkovic's office in his agricultural company in Laplje Selo, the only remaining Serbian company in the Pristina area.
International Civil UN Police and KFOR immediately launched the investigation. Late in the afternoon Mr. Trajkovic was visited by Gen. dr. Klaus Reinhardt, COMKFOR, Mr. Jock Covey the political deputy of Mr. Couchner as well as many journalists.
The Serb National Council (SNC) headed by Bishop Artemije strongly condemned this attack on the President of the SNC Executive Board. The attack on Trajkovic is an attack against all Kosovo Serbs and all moderate forces who support multiethnic and democratic society. This is evidently the act of political terrorism which is being carried on by extremist Albanian political groups with the goal of final expulsion of the Serb national community from Kosovo and Metohija. This attack shows that the Albanian terrorists are ready to fight against their political opponents by terror and crime. This attack as well as the recent attack on Serbs who played football in Lipljan are examples of the most brutal violation of the basic human rights. All this happens in the presence of the international peace forces and the UN mission.
