Chicago Athletic Club - A wonderful old club (founded in 1890s) in an art deco-esqe building located across from the Art Insititue of Chicago

The Chicago Athletic Association is located just steps away from the best attractions, shopping and Chicago nightlife.

12 South Michigan Avenue
Chicago, IL 60603

Telephone: 312-236-7500
Fax: 312-236-7537

Getting There: From I-90 north or south, take the Washington exit and travel east to Michigan Avenue. Turn south and travel one block to the hotel.

History: This 11-story Venetian fantasy adds variety and interest to the wall of the buildings along Michigan Avenue. When completed, it boasted of having the largest number of athletic facilities under one roof, and it remains a private club today. The top two floors contain a great dining hall. Architect Henry Ives Cobb (1859-1931) was comfortable working in a variety of architectural styles, including Richardson Romanesque for the Newberry Library and former Chicago Historical Society, both 1892, as well as English Gothic for the first buildings of the University of Chicago. Among his best known designs was Potter Palmer's "castle" mansion on Lake Shore Drive (1882), which he designed in partnership with Charles Sumner Frost.
